The Technology Strategy Board is a business-led executive non-departmental public body, established by the government. Its role is to promote and support research into, and development and exploitation of, technology and innovation for the benefit of UK business, in order to increase economic growth and improve the quality of life. It is sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
Balsall Heath Housing Co-op is a small, not-for-profit-making housing co-op. It provides housing on the co-operative principles to 78 households in Balsall Heath, an inner-city area of Birmingham.
Encraft will be the technical lead and project managers. Encraft are consulting engineers specialising in low carbon energy technologies for buildings and have carried out many hundreds of property evaluations and retrofit designs in the past six years. Encraft are extensively networked across the construction supply chain in the West Midlands, having delivered the AWM sponsored Sustainable Public buildings Programme from 2007-2009 (which included running dissemination and training events for over 180 local construction SMEs).
Building surveying and clerk of works will be supplied by Birmingham Co-operative Housing Services. BCHS is at the forefront of developing successful tenant-led co-operative housing management organisations across the West Midlands.
Chapman Design, a local architectural practice specialising in sustainable building design, will be assisting Encraft Ltd in the technical design for this project including providing all architectural drawings.
The main building contractor during the duration of the project will be Logmoor Ltd – a small Birmingham based building and construction company situated in the Balsall Heath area. They have a long and successful relationship as providers of buildings maintenance and repairs services to Balsall Heath Housing Co-operative.
The heating and solar thermal system installation will be carried out by Birmingham based New World Solar Installations Ltd. New World Solar specialise in the installation of renewable energy technologies and were the main contractor on the UK largest solar thermal retrofit project (the award winning Summerfield Eco-village project). As part of the project, New World Solar will work on local skills development with the Jericho Foundation, which is a social enterprise working with the long term unemployed.
The high performance glazing and external doors we will be using are to be supplied and installed by the Green Building Store – a specialist manufacturer/supplier of high performance FSC-certified timber windows and doors. The company recently won a Queens Award for Enterprise for its ‘pioneering approach to sustainability’.
Transcast Ltd are a specialist insulation and render contractor covering the whole of the UK from offices in Airdrie, Solihull and Leeds. Established in 1997 they carry out all types of external render and insulated render, specialising in the refurbishment market.
Hagley Stoves are a dedicated solid fuel stoves supplier and installer based in Kidderminster. They have more than 17 years of experince in the industry selling a wide range of wood burning stoves by leading manufacturers.
